Murder on the Inkle Express

Updated: Mar 19, 2024

This 3-week project focused on the use of defensive writing in a text game. The goal was to conditionally provide information to the player based on what they have already learned and in the end arrive at a predetermined conclusion. The five of us were responsible for different sections of our game, these sections being train cars where the player meets the NPCs. I was responsible for the cargo car where the player talks to Harold Copeland, the lazy HR manager.

Over the course of this project, we planned out how the player discovers the information about the murder mystery and which information certain NPCs have. I had to be thorough about adding conditional code that would lock off the corresponding dialogue as well as referencing the bits of dialogue my team members wrote. This process required a lot of back-and-forth discussions, playtesting, and triple-checking to confirm we had a working story.
